Duch Supreme Court Chamber Judgement To Be Pronounced Early Next Year PDF Print E-mail

The Appeal Judgement in Case 001 concerning the Accused Kaing Guek Eav, alias Duch, will be pronounced on Feb. 3, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. (local time) in the main courtroom of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC), according to an ECCC press release issued last Thursday.

On July 26, 2010, the Trial Chamber convicted him of certain crimes against humanity and grave breaches of the Geneva Convention of 1949, said the press release, stressing that the Trial Chamber sentenced Duch to 35 years of imprisonment and granted two claims for reparations.The Accused, Co-Prosecutors, and Civil Parties Groups 1, 2, and 3 appealed against the Trial Judgement. Written appellate pleadings closed on Mar. 25, 2011, and appeal hearings were held from Mar. 28-30, 2011. The Supreme Court admitted a total of 26 items of additional evidence from the Accused and Civil Parties Groups pursuant to Internal Rule 108(7).More than 2,900 people followed the appeal proceedings at the Court building, the press release said.
